A Note To Those Leaving Comments

Hi everyone,

We greatly appreciate the time people take to leave comments, and as we are learning about internet safety, we do not expect anyone to leave their full name.  However, it would be nice for us if you could perhaps put your first name and also your school/location at the end of your comment so that we can plot our visitors' locations on the map in our room as well as having them on the map on the blog.

Thank you kindly

Miss Sampson

Trip to Orakei Marae 25 May 2009

The middle syndicate's trip to the Marae coincided with the Hikoi planned to protest the Government's decision not to have Maori seats on the proposed "Supercity" council.

By the time we arrived all the protestors had left for the Hikoi, so we had the Marae to ourselves.

For our international visitors:
A Marae is a sacred place which serves both religious and social purposes.  In general a Marae consists of a meeting house (Wharenui - which literally translates as "Big House"), and a kitchen area (Wharekai - food house).

Lined up, ready to go!

Waiting outside ready for the powhiri - not
all of us were able to fit under the shelter!

Practising our Rakau - Room 20 were acting
as teachers for Room 19 as we already knew
the song and some actions.

Mahunga, Pokohiwi, Puku, Hope Waewae...
(Heads, Shoulders, Tummy, Hips, Legs - the Maori
version of Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes)

Good friends hanging out with the Tiki!
